Step Into Comfort: Your Guide to the Perfect Fit

Step Into Comfort: Your Guide to the Perfect Fit

A gorgeous pair of shoes is only truly perfect if they fit just right. Too tight and you’re in pain, too loose and you risk slipping or blisters. When shopping online or in-store, here’s how to check the fit and make sure your shoes love your feet as much as you love them.

How to Find Your Perfect Fit

Toe Room
Your toes should have space to move. Aim for about a thumb’s width (around 1cm) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. If your toes feel squashed or rub against the top, the fit isn’t right.

Heel Hold
A little slip at the heel when the shoe is brand new isn’t unusual — especially with leather shoes that soften over time. But if your heel lifts more than a few millimetres with each step, it can cause rubbing and blisters. Insoles, heel grips, or thicker socks can help.

Width & Sides
Shoes should feel snug but not tight across the ball of the foot. If the sides bulge or press uncomfortably, you may need a wider fit. If they gape, try a narrower option.

Adjustability Matters
Look for features that let you customise the fit:

    • Velcro closures – allow small tweaks for day-to-day comfort.
    • Elastic gussets – give stretch around the ankle or instep while keeping a secure hold.
    • Adjustable straps – tighten or loosen as needed
    • Laces – the most versatile, letting you adjust across the entire foot.

Arch & Insole Support
Check that the arch of the shoe lines up with your own. If not, removable insoles can help you customise the fit — especially if you wear orthotics.

Walk Test
Don’t just stand still. Take a few steps on different surfaces. Do your toes slide forward? Do your heels slip too much? The right fit should feel secure but comfortable, with no pinching, rubbing, or over-flexing.

Know Your Size (and Width!)
Brands aren’t always consistent with sizing. Some run wider (like Cabello), others narrower (such as Django & Juliette). Always check the size guide and, if possible, measure your foot length and width to compare.

Think About Socks & Stockings
Try on shoes with what you’ll actually wear them with. A sneaker feels different with a sports sock than a sandal does barefoot, or a boot with thick winter socks. This one small step prevents a lot of surprises later.

Sizing Tip for Online Shoppers
If you’re between sizes, go for the larger one. It’s always easier to add a cushioned insole or wear a thicker sock than to stretch out a shoe that’s too tight.

Common Fit Questions

What if my heel slips a little?
A small lift at first is fine — especially in leather shoes that will soften and mould. Try heel grips or insoles if it doesn’t improve.

What if my toes touch the end?
If your toes are pressing against the front, size up. Even slight pressure can cause blisters or nail issues over time.

What if one foot is bigger?
It’s very common. Always fit to your larger foot and use insoles or padding in the other shoe to balance it out.
